MBS Suicide
Singapore — The Chinese embassy in Singapore has issued a public reminder to its citizens to refrain from gambling, following a tragic incident involving one of its nationals. According to a statement released on February 14, the embassy confirmed that the individual had taken his own life after gambling at Marina Bay Sands (MBS), one of Singapore’s most iconic resorts. The embassy did not provide specific details regarding the date of the incident.
In the statement, the embassy also mentioned that it is currently assisting the family of the deceased with funeral arrangements. This incident follows a similar warning issued by the embassy in March 2024, aimed at discouraging Chinese citizens from engaging in gambling activities while abroad.
Although the embassy has made its stance clear, legal experts have pointed out that there is no formal legislation in China that criminalizes gambling by Chinese nationals overseas, despite the embassies’ repeated advisories.
